Military Web Maps

Surfing the web (since there is rarely 'real' surf around) this afternoon I came across an interesting project by Andrew Cooke which dynamically displays which countries spend the most money per year on the military. Size of the colored blobs is proportional to the total amount spent and the color shows what fraction of each country's GDP is used. It's very intuitive and all driven by XML technology, pulling data from the CIA Wold Fact Book.
Also check out another Flash XML-driven map online depicting the Iraq War Coalition casualties (updated only as of Oct. 2007). This one is a bit overwhelming knowing it's almost a year out of date. Much respect to our family members and all men and women overseas defending our country.

ps note that for some reason (a bug in my code i think) russia isn't on that image, which is a bit annoying/misleading. i never noticed until someone spotted it. at some point i should fix it...
